Single Car Rollover On The Interstate
By Chief of Department Brian McGill
December 17, 2011
On Saturday December 17 around 3 pm Bedford Hills Firefighters were alerted to a reported motor vehicle accident rollover on the interstate in the vicinity of the rest area. Cars 2031 and 2033 were responding almost immediately and were advised that it was unknown if there were any victims trapped in the vehicle. Once on scene Chiefs McGill and Liburdi determined that there was negative entrapment, but requested apparatus continue into the scene. Rescue 10, Engine 198 and Mini Attack 9 took up blocking positions in the right lane to protect all emergency personnel on scene. The accident occurred when a single car had left the roadway struck a guide rail and rolled over, lading on its drivers side. The sole occupant of the car had self extricated himself and stated he was uninjured. As the car struck the guide rail it pierced the engine compartment in front of the driver's side headlight, continued past the engine and through the firewall. Once through the firewall it traveled pass the passenger seat and hit the passenger door with such force that it popped it open. Members assisted the tow company by cutting the guide rail so that the car could be transported, KBHVAC secured an RMA and with no further fire department action required all Bedford Hills Fire units were returned to service.
