By Deputy Chief Brian McGill
March 11, 2012

Just past 5 A.M. on Sunday March 11 Bedford Hills Fire Department was dispatched mutual aid to a private dwelling fire on Goldens Bridge Rd in Katonah. KFD had been alerted to a reported bedroom fire at the location and once on scene notified dispatch of a heavy smoke condition on the second story of a three story private house. With Katonah units already responding, command preformed a quick size up and with that and information from the homeowner upgraded the assignment to a 10-75 response (woking fire). This brought in apparatus and manpower from Bedford Hills, Mt. Kisco, Goldens Bridge and South Salem fire departments.

Bedford Hills was requested to respond with Tower Ladder 57 and Tanker 5 to assist with fire ground operations. BHFD units were on the road moments after dispatch and once on location received their fire ground assignments from command. With a water source established ( a hydrant approximately 600 feet from the scene) Tanker 5 was asked to help with interior ops while Tower Ladder 57 operated on the roof off of portable ladders and the TL bucket. Members from Katonah with help from the mutual aid departments were able to locate the seat of the fire, open up surrounding walls/ceilings, and extinguish the main body of fire. Once that was complete members preformed the daunting task of overhaul and found extension of fire in multiple locations throughout the building. After all fire had been extinguished Katonah command declared the fire under control. Once members returned all tools and ladders back on the apparatus and filed air cylinders Tower Ladder 57 was returned to BHFD, while Tanker 5 was relocated to Katonah FD to stand by until the remaining KFD rigs were back in service.

A job well done goes out to all firefighters on scene of this fire. It was a stubborn fire to locate and extinguish but it didn't stop members from using their training to overcome any and all obstacles that they were faced with.

Units: Bedford Hills Car 2031, 2033 Tower Ladder 57 Tanker 5
