Bedford Hills FAST Responds to Mt. Kisco
By Deputy Chief Brian McGill
April 29, 2012
On Saturday April 29 Bedford Hills Members arrived at the fire house in the early morning for the second day of an Engine Operations class taught By Tom Shand of Emergence Vehicle Response. After checking friction loss and calculating dater flow on hand lines members learned how to pack a "Minute Man Load". As members packed the hose and deployed it multiple times Tom Shand explained the benefits of the minute man load when Mt. Kisco Fire Department was dispatched for a possible structure fire.
As the BHFD crew packed the remaining hose they monitored the radio transmissions from the responding units in Mt. Kisco. Assistant Chief John Bodie was first on scene within minutes and notified control of a smoke condition from the building with smoke inside as well. At this point members started donning their gear and discussing their riding assignments if BHFD was dispatched.
As BHFD firefighters started walking to the apparatus Chief Bodie radioed 60 Control dispatchers requesting a 10-75 for a working structure fire which brought Bedford Hills to the scene with a FAS-Team. Cars 2031 (Bueti), 2033 (Lombardo) and Tower Ladder 57 (FAST) were all responding before the tones had finished dropping. Enroute FAST members were advised that the fire building was a two story private dwelling with fire on the first floor with possible extension to the second floor.
As the Chiefs and Tower Ladder arrived the FAST equipment was deployed to the front of the building, and a size up (walk around of the building) was preformed. Car 2281 (AJ Jackson) MKFD requested that the FAS-Team be split into two and one half was to enter the building with a second line for fire suppression. The remaining FAST members laddered the building in numerous spots and stood fast in the driveway of the building. Mt. Kisco made a quick knock down of the fire and started to overhaul and check for any further extension of fire throughout the building. Once the fire was under control all Bedford Hills FD units were returned to service by command.
