On Friday at approximately 10:00am BHFD was dispatched to Interstate 684 Northbound, north of Rt. 172 for a reported motor vehicle accident involving a State Trooper. Car 2034 was first to arrive on location and took command of the incident, upon arrival the Interstate was completely shut down with bumper to bumper traffic, due to a 4 car accident spread across all three lanes of the Highway.

Bedford Hills members from Engine 199, Utility 6, and Mini Attack 9 worked to secure all vehicles involved and applied fluid absorbent to mitigate any spilled fluids.

The initial report was that the State Trooper was conducting a traffic stop and had a vehicle stopped on the right shoulder when a tractor trailer struck him from behind. The tractor trailer then rear ended the stopped vehicle pushing him across all three lanes of the highway in the process hitting another vehicle.

Once all the vehicles involved were secured the fire department was released from the scene however the roadway remained closed by the New York State Police, while the conducted an accident investigation.

Thankfully the State Trooper was transported with non-life threatening injuries.

Please, take the time to review the “Move Over Law” which we have in New York State:
“Drivers MUST use due care when approaching an emergency vehicle or hazard vehicle including police vehicles, fire trucks, ambulances, construction and maintenance vehicles and tow trucks. The Move Over Law applies to both sides of the roadway, not just the shoulder on the right.”
