Cars 2031 and 2033 were responding almost immediately and were advised that it was unknown if there were any victims trapped in the vehicle. Once on scene Chiefs McGill and Liburdi determined that there was negative entrapment, but requested apparatus continue into the scene. Rescue 10, Engine 198 and Mini Attack 9 took up blocking positions in the right lane to protect all emergency personnel on scene. The accident occurred when a single car had left the roadway struck a guide rail and rolled over, lading on its drivers side. The sole occupant of the car had self extricated himself and stated he was uninjured. As the car struck the guide rail it pierced the engine compartment in front of the driver's side headlight, continued past the engine and through the firewall. Once through the firewall it traveled pass the passenger seat and hit the passenger door with such force that it popped it open. Members assisted the tow company by cutting the guide rail so that the car could be transported, KBHVAC secured an RMA and with no further fire department action required all Bedford Hills Fire units were returned to service. Captain Robbie Bancroft donned the traditional red suit, added the white hair and beard, and hopped aboard Engine 199. Several "elves" dressed in turnout gear joined St. Nick. Firefighters sounded the siren and pulled the air horn as they drove slowly through the streets. The truck stopped at intersections where children gathered for pictures, got a candy cane, and made their annual Christmas gift request. "A computer?" asked Santa after one girl whispered in his ear. "Elves--make a note of that," he said to young firefighters Riley DeJong and Kyle Brown dressed in elf hats and bunker gear. The convoy stopped at the Community House where several hundred residents had gathered for the annual holiday breakfast. Santa posed for more pictures with willing participants while some children ran screaming back to their parents, drawing the familiar, "Ho Ho Ho," from the big man. Sat, 05 Nov 2011 23:24:41 GMT http://www.bedfordhillsfd.org/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=283 FAST Responds To Vista http://www.bedfordhillsfd.org/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=286 A family of five, including three young children, escaped a fire in a house in South Salem this morning. A fire at 82 Mill River Road in South Salem just before 2 this morning prompted firefighters from Vista Fire Department and several other New York and Connecticut fire departments to respond. Vista Fire Chief William Dingee said that upon arrival, heavy smoke was showing from structure. The occupants reported that everyone was safely out of the building and that they heard crackling noises in the basement, Chief Dingee said. Firefighters stretched two hose lines into the building and found fire in the basement area. They extinguished all visible fire but high heat remained, Chief Dingee said. Ventilation by removing windows provided no relief, according to Chief Dingee, so it was determined that the fire had entered a concealed space in the walls and was still burning. Chief Dingee said the 18th Century house was built without fire stops and allowed for the fire to travel in the walls into the first and second floors and into the attic space — a common defect in older buildings built prior to the 1930's. Firefighters, using hand tools, worked to open up walls on all floors and extinguished the fire, he said. Fire and water damage was moderate in the basement and first floor kitchen areas with extensive damage on the second floor in the attic area. Westchester County Cause and Origin investigators said the cause of the fire was accidental and most likely caused by a failure of a fireplace that caused the floor under the fireplace to ignite. Due to the extended power outage from the October snow storm, the occupants were continuously burning in the fireplace to provide heat to the home which may have contributed to the fire, Chief Dingee said. The family that is renting the house escaped the fire and is now staying in a hotel. The Red Cross assisted the family with temporary housing and emergency funds for food, clothing and storage, and its mental-health specialists are providing emotional support. In all, about 45 firefighters responded to the scene. Firefighters put out the fire at this South Salem home early this morning. Cars 2032 and 2033 entered the highway from South Bedford Road and headed north to check for the accident. The chiefs were updated by 60 control that State Troopers were now reporting the accident was possibly in Goldens Bridge Fire District North of Rt. 35. Car 2031 responding from home jumped on the Interstate from Rt. 35 and headed to the updated location while Chiefs Bueti and Liburdi stated that the original site was clear and they were continuing northbound. Car 2031 was the first fire unit on location and confirmed the accident in Goldens Bridge district, requesting Engine 199 continue in to the scene. After a quick size up the chief determined that there was one person still in the car and that a door pop would be needed. Engine 199 arrived on scene and assisted the medic with patient care, as Goldens Bridge fd helped EMS with the removal of the patient from the car. With the victim in the care of EMS personnel Bedford Hills FD units were released by Goldens Bridge. Cars 2031 and 2032 were responding immediately after dispatch and were notified by 60 control that the home owner stated there was fire coming from the top of the chimney and there was smoke filling the house. With Tower Ladder 57 being out of service Chief Bueti requested a ladder from Mount Kisco Fire Department to stand by in their headquarters. As Engine 198 Rescue 10 and Tanker 5 were responding Chief Bueti arrived on scene and with a quick size up of the residence determined that the Tower Ladder would be needed on scene and requested it to respond. Tower Ladder 14 from MKFD responded as well as Engine 199 and Utility 6 bringing the full department response from Bedford Hills. Car 2031 arrived on location and established Guard Hill rd command as car 2032 took command of all fire ground operations. Crews from Engine 198, Rescue 10 and Tower Ladder 14 operated on scene as all other units stood by until needed. Engine 198 members were assigned interior operations, extinguishing the remaining fire in the fire place and checking all floors in the area of the chimney for any kind of extension. Tower Ladder 14 was assigned roof operations to sweep the chimney with a chain and check for any visible fire or heat damage. After it was determined that all fire was extinguished and there was negative extension outside the flu of the chimney all units were placed back into service by BHFD command. Sat, 22 Oct 2011 02:16:15 GMT http://www.bedfordhillsfd.org/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=282 Monday Night Training http://www.bedfordhillsfd.org/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=281 On Monday October 10 members of the Bedford Hills Fire Department gathered at headquarters for the second night of a drill that included Res-Q-Jack, Airbag, Vehicle Stabilization, and Extrication. On this night members used their knowledge and skills to size up the scene and determine a quick and safe way to disentangle a victim from a car at an accident scene. Members were faced with a van which was on its side with a patient (rescue dummy) placed outside and under the driver side door. On this night members utilized Res-Q-Jacks off of Rescue 10 as well as different methods of cribbing to safely remove the rescue dummy from harm. While Firefighters were performing multiple evolutions and different scenarios, the members of the Junior Corps were led by Deputy Chief Lombardo and Lt. Spano in extrication techniques. Junior members were able to use the Lucas spreaders and cutters to remove multiple doors off of a Chevy Blazer. As well as get their hands on the air chisel and open up different parts of the car. Fri, 21 Oct 2011 04:46:28 GMT http://www.bedfordhillsfd.org/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=281 MVA With Injuries On Darlington Rd. http://www.bedfordhillsfd.org/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=280 On October 4 at 2:30 in the afternoon members of the Bedford Hills Volunteer Fire Department were alerted to a reported motor vehicle accident with injuries on Darlington Road. Both cars 2031 Mcgill and 2032 (Bueti) were responding within minutes followed by Engine 199 and Rescue 10. Chief Bueti was on location first and notified incoming units that the car was off the road into a ditch and was unstable at the present time. Chief Bueti also advised both the Engine and Rescue of the make, model and year of the vehicle involved. This allowed the officers of both rigs to input the information into the Hurst Crash database on the MDT'S and utilize any pertinent points about the car involved. Once Chief Mcgill arrived on scene he established command as Chief Bueti took fire ground operations. Command radioed first due ( Engine 199) that they would need to stabilize the car with jacks and cribbing before EMS could remove the victim. The Engine crew made quick work of stabilizing the vehicle as the crew from rescue 10 assisted by utilizing the rear winch off of the engine to stabilize the car even further. Once the car was determined to be stable by operations members assisted KBHVAC with patient care and removal. BHFD crews placed the rigs back into service with all equipment as a tow arrived for the accident vehicle. Command was terminated and all Bedford Hills apparatus was placed back into service. Both Chiefs Bueti and Liburdi were on the road responding shortly after dispatch, to the Saw Mill River Parkway northbound just south of the Green Lane exit. 60 control advised both chiefs that there was an off duty firefighter on scene confirming entrapment and serious injury. Car 2033 (Liburdi) was the first to arrive and confirmed what had already been relayed to him, advised 60 control to expedite all units and to start out a second ambulance. Chief Bueti arrived on scene minutes later with Engine 199 and Rescue 10 and assumed command of the incident while Chief Liburdi was assigned the operations sector of the extrication. It was apparent that a vehicle traveling southbound had crossed over into the northbound lanes and had struck a suv head on causing heavy entrapment in one car. Crews from Engine 199 and Rescue 10 split up and took control of multiple tasks at the same time. Units performed a quick size up, stabilized the vehicle, assisted with initial patient care and started the process of extricating the patient from the vehicle. Mini Attack 9 and Utility 6 brought extra personnel to the scene to assist with needed fire ground operations. Members utilized both sets of Lucas tools from the Engine and the Rescue. Removing all four doors, half of the roof and performing a needed dash roll to remove the patient. Extrication was completed in approximately thirty minutes and firefighters assisted in removing the victim into the care of awaiting KBHVAC members. With all patients transported car 2032 and Engine 199 remained on location to assist Westchester County Police with scene lighting for the accident investigation. Rigs were fueled, gas cans were filled, saws started and tuned up, and supplies checked. At the same time the chiefs met and determined a plan of action for the storm, they also discussed how the command center would operate during the inclement weather. As the storm approached on Saturday Bedford Hills began to experience steady rainfall and gusting winds. The first storm related call was dispatched Early Sunday morning at 02:30 hours and was reported to be a possible structure fire with residents reporting smoke in the house. Upon further investigation units found a wire burning in the vicinity of the structure which had caused wires inside the house to burn and create a smoke condition. Within the first 24 hours the members of the Bedford Hills Volunteer Fire Department answered 20 fire calls. After the storm had blown through the district, members continued to answer an additional 15 storm related calls. Within the 48 hour period firefighters were dispatched to a variety of calls including but not limited to. That meant getting the fire apparatus responding and on location in half the usual time. With the regularly received runs and the additional storm related runs, the Bedford Hills fire Department answered a total of 71 calls for the month of August. The Chiefs would like to commend and thank the dedicated members of the Bedford Hills Fire Department for a JOB WELL DONE!!!! Without you it couldn't have been done!!!!!! The call was reported to be on Robinson ave off of Babbitt road, Car 2032 (Chief Bueti) was the first fire unit on scene and had trouble locating the reported residence. With no house number on Robinson matching the number that was reported, Chief Bueti determined that it would be a good idea to check Robinhood Road off of Nottingham for the reported incident. He redirected all units to the new location and once on scene found that a large tree had uprooted in the rear yard of the house, had struck and penetrated the second floor and was hanging over the front of the structure. Shortly after arrival Car 2033 (Liburdi) and Car 2031 (McGill) along with Engine 199 and Rescue 10 were on location and sizing up the incident. All the residents of the home had self evacuated and were unharmed. There was a missing family cat but the homeowner stated that the cat would come outside after all the commotion had calmed down. Fire fighters were able to enter the residence to secure the power and water to the house, while command notified the Town of Bedford Building Department and NYSEG for response. Once on location the TOB Building Department representative deemed the house unsafe and declared that nobody was allowed to enter the house until a time when the tree had been removed. NYSEG was able to kill power from the telephone poll to the house due to multiple branches leaning on the main power lines feeding the residence. With all the utilities secure and no further fire department action required all Bedford Hills Fire Department units and personnel were returned into service by command.
