The public referendum vote passed in December 2008, the building permits have been issued, the old building has been torn down, the general contractor has been chosen, the trees have been cut down, and the ground breaking is under way! It has been a long time coming and is by far one of the largest projects undertaken by the Bedford Hills Fire District. The current fire house was built in 1959 and stands at 12,700 square feet with two floors and four garage bays for the fire apparatus. This building has served the department well, however with the apparatus getting larger over the years and the membership increasing, the department has outgrown the current building. With the help of our architect, The Helms Group L.L.P. of Katonah, the Fire District Commissioners and the Fire Department Building Committee made an educated decision to renovate the current fire house, while also building a two bay addition on the north side of the building. This process took approximately two years, and included many meetings.

The general contractor for the project is Franchise Construction and they will be in charge of the 7,168 square foot addition as well as the renovation of the old building. The renovation will make the fire house completely handicap accessible, which also includes installing an elevator in the building. It will also give the district a chance to overhaul the original plumbing, heating, and electrical systems. Some of the new additions to the building are as follows: There will be an emergency command room which will be used for large scale town emergency incidents. This space will provide Command Staff with a secure working area that includes telephones, computer/internet, TV, while also keeping them away from the elements. The building will also have an emergency bunk room for members to sleep in during inclement weather or emergencies, so members will not have to respond to the fire house. Keeping firefighters in physical shape is another concern to the district and department, so there will be a physical fitness room equipped with cardio and weight machines.

Pictures will be added regularly to the department website so return often to check the progress of our project. We have created a photo album "Building Renovation" under the Photo/Video tab. Again we would like to express our sincere gratitude to the residents of the Bedford Hills Fire District for their support, Without You, This Project Wouldn't Be Possible.
