Large Tree Falls On House During Storm

By Chief of Department Brian McGill
August 21, 2011

On August 21, 2011 just before 2 pm Bedford Hills units were dispatched to a reported tree that had fallen on a residence. The call was reported to be on Robinson ave off of Babbitt road, Car 2032 (Chief Bueti) was the first fire unit on scene and had trouble locating the reported residence. With no house number on Robinson matching the number that was reported, Chief Bueti determined that it would be a good idea to check Robinhood Road off of Nottingham for the reported incident. He redirected all units to the new location and once on scene found that a large tree had uprooted in the rear yard of the house, had struck and penetrated the second floor and was hanging over the front of the structure. Shortly after arrival Car 2033 (Liburdi) and Car 2031 (McGill) along with Engine 199 and Rescue 10 were on location and sizing up the incident. All the residents of the home had self evacuated and were unharmed. There was a missing family cat but the homeowner stated that the cat would come outside after all the commotion had calmed down.
Fire fighters were able to enter the residence to secure the power and water to the house, while command notified the Town of Bedford Building Department and NYSEG for response. Once on location the TOB Building Department representative deemed the house unsafe and declared that nobody was allowed to enter the house until a time when the tree had been removed. NYSEG was able to kill power from the telephone poll to the house due to multiple branches leaning on the main power lines feeding the residence. With all the utilities secure and no further fire department action required all Bedford Hills Fire Department units and personnel were returned into service by command.
