New Stop Sign Added to Improve Firefighter and Pedestrian Safety in Front of BHFD HQ

In 2006, a Bedford Hills Firefighter was struck by a vehicle in the crosswalk while crossing the street from the parking lot to HQ during an alarm. Fortunately his injuries were minor, although they could have been fatal based upon the impact. Since that date, there have been many near misses with firefighters and pedestrians utilizing the crosswalk to cross the street in front of BHFD.

At the request of the Bedford Hills Fire Department, and in conjunction with the Bedford Police and Bedford DPW, the Bedford Town Board approved changing the yield sign to a stop sign on the extension from Bedford Road to Adams Street.

This project is an excellent example of government efficiency and interagency cooperation, which met the primary goal of enhancing the safety of the traveling public.

Town of Bedford residents, please take note of the change in the traffic control device and we urge you to always use extreme caution when traveling in front of BHFD HQ's, as our firefighters are constantly in and out of the building.
