| A serious motor vehicle accident on the Saw Mill River Parkway prompted a multi-agency emergency response Tuesday afternoon. At approximately 1:47pm. on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, the Bedford Hills Fire Department was dispatched to a reported motor vehicle accident with entrapment on the Saw Mill River Parkway. Chief Patierno (Car 2031) arrived first on scene and determined the crash had occurred within the Katonah Fire District, between the Route 117 Bypass exit and the Harris Road exit. Chief Patierno advised 60 Control that the victim was heavily entrapped after an SUV had underridden a tractor-trailer. He immediately requested mutual aid from the Katonah Fire Department. Engine 199 and Rescue 10 responded and initiated an extensive extrication operation. Firefighters deployed specialized equipment, including cribbing, Paratech Hydra-Fusion struts, a grip hoist, and Hurst eDRAULIC tools, to stabilize and lift the tractor-trailer off the SUV. Crews from Bedford Hills and Katonah assisted with stabilization and lifting operations, while Bedford Hills firefighters and members of the Westchester County Police Emergency Services Unit worked together to successfully extricate the victim. The complex rescue operation took approximately 30 minutes to complete. Once freed, the patient was treated on scene by personnel from the Katonah Bedford Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Westchester EMS before being transported to Westchester Medical Center for further care. The cause of the accident remains under investigation. |
