Tanker 5 First Due on M/A Fire
By Firefighter Mark Kane
December 26, 2009
Shortly after 21:45 hours on Friday, December 25, 2009 Bedford Village was dispatched for a reported chimney fire on David's Way. Per protocol Tankers from Bedford Hills and Katonah and a Ladder from Mt Kisco were also dispatched. Enroute to the fire, units were updated by Bedford PD that they had an active Chimney Fire. Upon arrival Bedford Hills Car 2032 (Chief Bueti) transmitted a working structure fire, bringing Mt. Kisco FAST and Engine 198 to the scene and advised of a male occupant unaccounted for and reportedly inside the structure. While Chief Bueti prepared to enter the structure to conduct a primary search, the homeowner was able to escape. Tanker 5 arrived and assumed first due engine responsibilities, dropping the portable pond and laying a 5" supply line down the driveway. Under the direction of Lt. Bancroft and Past Chief S. Curro the crew advanced a 1 ¾" line to the second floor and began pulling ceilings where a fire was discovered in a void space, extending to the attic. Due to aggressive line placement and ceiling pulling the fire was quickly knocked down. Bedford Village, Bedford Hills, and Katonah units opened up, controlled utilities, and completed searches and the fire was placed under control by Bedford Command at 22:18 hours. During the duration of the incident Mt. Kisco's FASTeam provided the R.I.T. and also performed Truck functions.
