Lawn Mower Fire
By Chief of Department Brian McGill
July 14, 2011
On Thursday July 14 just after 1pm Bedford Hills FD was dispatched to a reported motor vehicle fire in the area of 57 West Patent Road. 60 Control advised Car 2031 (McGill) who was already responding, that they had received the nature and location from a third party caller who was not on location. While responding Chief McGill monitored a transmission from a Bedford PD unit who stated that the fire was not on West Patent but actually on a property off of West Patent Rd. The PD unit also advised the Chief that he could see a large column of smoke and that the fire was in the vicinity of a house on the said property. Chief McGill radioed 60 Control and requested that Tanker 5 respond first due out of Bedford Hills, and due to the fire being out of the water district requested one tanker mutual aid from Katonah Fire.
Tanker 5 and Car 2031 arrived on location shortly after dispatch, and conducted a primary size up of the scene and incident. A large ride on lawn mower with trailer and a push mower were on fire right off the main driveway. The equipment and trailer were both far enough away from the structure that there was no exposure hazard. When the fire broke out there was a landscaping truck attached to the trailer, until a quick thinking worker ran over and unhooked the truck and moved it away from the fire. In the process the male worked had sustained minor burns to his leg and arm, so Bedford Police made notification to have a medic and ambulance respond to the scene. After the fire was extinguished and overhauled members assisted KBHVAC with first aid and patient packaging. Once Katonah Bedford Hills Vac transported the victim Bedford Hills Fire units were released into service by command.
