BHFD Responds To Rollover MVA On Saw Mill Parkway Involving Exotic Sports Car
By Firefighter David I. Tomack
October 8, 2025
On Tuesday, October 7th at 15:06 (3:06pm), BHFD was dispatched to the Saw Mill River Parkway for a reported motor vehicle accident (MVA) with injuries. Car 2032 was first on scene, and upon arrival confirmed the MVA involving two vehicles with a rollover in the northbound lane. Engine 199 and Rescue 10 arrived on location to find an SUV that had rolled over (but ultimately landed back on its tires) with its occupant suffering neck injuries and glass lacerations, as well as a Ferrari sports car that was severely damaged after being struck by the SUV. As additional Bedford Hills units arrived on scene (including Car 2031, Mini Attack 9, and Utility 6), the crews of E199 and R10 assisted with transferring the SUV driver to EMS and securing both vehicles. Securing a vehicle such as a modern Ferrari presents a challenge for emergency services, as the engineering is extremely complex and bespoke.
Normally-simple operations (such as finding and disconnecting the battery) vary greatly compared lo less-exotic vehicles. Complicating matters was that the Ferrari was a plug-in hybrid with a fully-charged high-voltage battery, thus presenting additional dangers to fire personnel. Not withstanding the foregoing, BHFD members train constantly to be able to handle unique scenarios such as those presented here, and were able to quickly and safely secure the Ferrari (as well as the SUV) and assisted with scene safety as both vehicles were removed from the roadway.
