YORKTOWN The roof of a two-story home on Elizabeth Road was heavily damaged last night after an electrical fire tore through the attic, authorities said.
Around 6 p.m., nearly 200 firefighters responded to 461 Elizabeth Road to control a fire that had already ripped through the top floor by the time crews arrived, said Yorktown Heights Assistant Fire Chief Martin McGannon.
Though the homeowner was home at the time, no one was injured .
McGannon said that upon arrival, he saw heavy smoke on the roof. He said the home's aging condition and older wood made controlling the blaze much more difficult.
Most of the damage was contained to the attic and a second-floor living room, McGannon said, adding that the house is uninhabitable.
The official cause is still being investigated but McGannon said it may have originated from the home's air conditioner.
Firefighters from several municipalities, including Ossining, Bedford Hills, Somers, Millwood, Peekskill, Croton-on-Hudson and Mount Kisco, assisted. |
